Conservatives’ new candidate aims to keep Bricknell Royal Blue

Hull Conservatives have selected Richard Royal as their candidate to fight Bricknell Ward in May’s local council elections as they look to build on their traditional support in the area.

Richard, 40, is an experienced Hull campaigner who has worked in the House of Commons and managed successful election campaigns for Government Ministers.

Richard runs his own public affairs and communications business with projects including some of the Humber’s largest renewables and low carbon energy initiatives. Richard’s local experience is supported by his previous roles, including as the Energy lead at the Humber LEP, where he oversaw the publication of the Humber Energy Strategy. He was also Head of Government Affairs at Saltend-based biofuels company Vivergo Fuels, where he led the national campaign for low carbon E10 petrol, whish is due to be introduced at UK pumps later this year.

Richard is also a competitive swimmer, and a member of Hull Masters Swimming Club and Humberside Water Polo Team. He has represented Great Britain at the World and European Masters Swimming Championships, and holds the Guinness World Record for swimming the River Humber.

Richard’s experience complements long-serving councillor John Fareham in Bricknell Ward at the elections on May 6th. Key local campaign issues include lobbying for a Bricknell rail halt, improvements to local open spaces, public safety and tackling crime, and reducing the tax burden on individuals and businesses.

Richard said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to have been selected to fight Bricknell Ward and am very excited about the prospect of serving local residents and the city of Hull as a councillor. I’m looking forward to campaigning alongside John and fighting for the issues that matter to local people. If elected I’ll do everything I can to ensure that Hull builds back better and greener following this devastating pandemic.”

Cllr John Fareham said:

I am pleased Richard has stepped forward, he has been a valuable member of the CONTACT team and worked with us on a number of community campaigns as a local campaigner. We look forward to meeting as many people as possible in the coming weeks and presenting a strong voice to Labour’s Guildhall bosses for the residents of Bricknell.
