We are just days away from a General Election and your one-off opportunity to change your Member of Parliament!

At the last Election Hartlepool had the highest increase in the Conservative vote in country, whilst UKIP only gained a quarter of our votes. Meanwhile Labour's Iain Wright saw his vote drop by 9%, further to the 9% he had already lost since the height of Peter Mandelson's time. If that trend continues the constituency will be on a knife-edge.

Now it only takes 2,755 votes to switch from Iain Wright to Richard...

A local charity joined thousands of Hartlepool United fans celebrating the team’s Great Escape from relegation this season, after benefiting from a bet on them staying up.

Richard Royal, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Hartlepool, was invited to visit the local Ladbrokes shop on Church Street in February when Pools were still four points adrift. He placed a £50 charity stake on Hartlepool United to remain in League Two at odds of 5/1.

The winnings of £300 have been donated to the Great North Air Ambulance Ser...

Hartlepool United Chairman Ken Hodcroft has praised Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Richard Royal’s interest and support for the club in his programme notes ahead of the final game of the season, whilst slamming Labour’s Iain Wright.

Hodcroft wrote to fans suggesting “maybe it’s time for change?” at the top of Hartlepool politics, urging them to “think carefully about voting for any councillor or MP who does not recognise the importance of this Football Club and its future and the income it brings into the town....

Richard Royal has written to Chancellor George Osborne requesting a cut in alcohol duty at the forthcoming budget.

The Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Hartlepool has challenged the Chancellor to make a 2% cut to help boost the local leisure and hospitality industry as well as brewers such as Cameron’s.

Within and around Hartlepool this sector is of major importance, employing a large number of people and providing many flexible jobs for young people such as students.

At a national level, the UK alcohol indust...

The CEO of NHS England has offered new hope in the row over Hartlepool Hospital after being quizzed by Conservative Candidate Richard Royal.

NHS Chief Simon Stevens said that he was opposed to too much centralisation in larger regional hospitals and wanted to “work with local communities who wanted to bring their hospital services back”.

At an event with NHS Chief Simon Stevens, Royal posed public questions that local residents desperately want answers to regarding the future of hospital services in the town. He asked...

Richard's speech at the Valentines Day Rally, organised by Save our Hospital and the Teesside Peoples' Assembly Against Austerity:

Good morning everyone, and happy Valentines Day!

Firstly I want to thank the organisers for putting today’s event together, getting such a wide range of speakers, and ensuring it is conducted in the right manner.

I’m not here today to score party political points. I’m not here to suggest that other candidates aren’t passionate and don’t care about this issue. Nor am I here t...

Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP

Secretary of State for Health

Department of Health
Richmond House

2nd February 2015

Dear Secretary of State,

I am writing to you regarding the issue of hospital services in Hartlepool, which you will already be aware of the strength of local feeling about.

The Labour Government brushed aside Lord Darzi’s 2005 recommendation to improve existing services at Hartlepool Hospital in favour of closing that facility and building a new £400m ‘super hospital’ at Wynyar...

Richard Royal, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Hartlepool, has backed calls for better provision of support for local people in mental health crisis. Mind, the mental health charity, is calling for local services to deliver on their promise to improve the support for people who are suicidal, self-harming or in psychosis.

Royal is a former Trustee of Mind and a mental health campaigner who has raised over £3,000 for mental health charities through sponsored swims in recent years.

I’ve always been impatient. Even before I entered the world. My first act was to insist on being born on a busy May Bank Holiday Monday. In my home town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire, the local hospital and its maternity ward did not open for a further nine years, forcing my Mum to suffer the twenty-three mile ambulance journey to Beverley which, even on a good day, would take upwards of 45 minutes. In this case, Bank Holiday traffic made it significantly longer and inevitably more painful. Perhaps also more dangerou...

I am pleased to read about the proposed Masterplan to regenerate Hartlepool town centre, albeit equally sceptical of its likelihood to be achieved. But whilst I welcome the intentions behind it, I will stand up for YOUR hard-earned and highly-taxed money to be spent wisely.

It would be fantastic if the National Museum of the Royal Navy, which has transformed many similar sites elsewhere, were to create a wider visitors complex at the Maritime Experience and Jackson’s Landing. Hartlepool’s historic ships and museum are...

January 7, 2015

Hartlepool’s Conservative candidate Richard Royal has backed calls to regenerate the abandoned Longscar Centre in Seaton Carew, but has urged caution over proposals to demolish rather than renovate the venue.

Royal has called on owners Capanac Leisure to push forward with their previous plans for the building, which has become an eyesore and a target for arson and low-level crime in recent years. He has confirmed that he will be writing to the owners for an update on their plans and proposals, whilst urging them to tak...
