My former school, Headlands in Bridlington, asked ex-pupils who have gone on to be 'role models' to talk to students about their favourite book.

I chose George Orwell's 1984, a timeless classic which delivers so many important messages today, just as it did over 70 years ago.

"The moral to be drawn from this story is a simple one - don't let it happen, it depends on you." - George Orwell.

In early November the Humber welcomed 800 delegates to Hull for the Energy and Clean Growth in the Northern Powerhouse conference.

As the conference began, Humber LEP Chair Lord Haskins set out one important question for the attendees to take into consideration as they listened to the speakers over the two days – how can we address climate change while maintaining economic growth?

The conference saw the publication of the NP11’s report into clean growth for the Northern Powerhouse, which set...

We live in exciting times for the Humber. In recent months there has been questioning of the Government’s seemingly wavering commitment to environmental issues, highlighted in the delay of publishing its Air Quality Report, and then on its sudden announcement to ban the sale of fossil fuel cars by 2040. After flippantly agreeing to join a teammate on an English Channel relay swim – organised by Aspire, the UK’s leading spinal injury charity – I have spent the last six months going through the processes and preparations for this challenging event. Having recently returned from the first acclimatisation weekend in Dover, I hope I can provide some advice to any readers considering taking part in future.

The first thing I’d say to anybody tempted to flick past these pages bec...

We are just days away from a General Election and your one-off opportunity to change your Member of Parliament!

At the last Election Hartlepool had the highest increase in the Conservative vote in country, whilst UKIP only gained a quarter of our votes. Meanwhile Labour's Iain Wright saw his vote drop by 9%, further to the 9% he had already lost since the height of Peter Mandelson's time. If that trend continues the constituency will be on a knife-edge.

Now it only takes 2,755 votes to switch from Iain Wright to Richard...
